The formula
Take a hitter's kills, subtract their attack errors, then divide by every attack attempt they took. That is the whole calculation.
Kills are terminal swings that score. Attack errors are swings that hand the other team the point: balls into the net, out of bounds, blocked straight down, or a call against the hitter. Total attempts count all of it, kills and errors and every swing that just stayed in play.
Hitting % = (Kills - Attack Errors) ÷ Total Attack Attempts

A worked example
Say an outside hitter takes 20 swings in a match. She puts away 9 kills. She makes 3 attack errors. The other 8 swings stay in play and get dug.
Subtract errors from kills: 9 minus 3 is 6. Divide by total attempts: 6 divided by 20 is .300. Her hitting percentage is .300, read as "three hundred."
Notice the 8 dug balls still count in the denominator even though they did not score. Every swing you take is an attempt, and taking a lot of swings without finishing them drags the number down.

Why it can go negative
Hitting percentage is the only common volleyball rate stat that can drop below zero. If a hitter makes more errors than kills, kills minus errors is a negative number, and the result comes out negative.
Take a hitter with 2 kills, 5 errors, and 12 attempts. That is 2 minus 5, which is -3, divided by 12, for a -.250. A negative number means the hitter is costing the team more points than they are scoring on attacks. It is a clear signal to change the shot selection or set someone else.

What counts as strong
At most levels, .300 is the benchmark for a strong match. Hit .300 and you are terminating well and keeping errors in check.
Context matters. Middle blockers running quick sets often post higher numbers because they swing on clean, fast balls. Outsides and right sides take tougher swings out of the back court and against a set block, so their marks run lower. Below .100 usually means errors are piling up or attempts are getting dug too often. Judge a hitter against their role, not just the raw figure.
