Softball goes seven innings, not nine, and that single fact reshapes one of the sport's most quoted numbers.

Earned run average is the signature rate stat, and in softball it scales to seven. The formula is ERA = 9 × ER ÷ IP in baseball, but softball measures a full game as seven innings, so ERA = 7 × ER ÷ IP. That is why a line that reads 4.50 in baseball reads 3.50 in softball off the same earned runs and innings. It rewards the pitcher who limits damage across a shorter route to the final out. Statside applies the seven-inning scale automatically, so a circle pitcher's ERA compares cleanly against the rest of the league instead of against a nine-inning yardstick that does not fit the game.

One entry note trips up newcomers: fastpitch uses the DP/FLEX tandem. Good and great split at the qualifying line. Statside ranks season leaders only past a minimum-appearance threshold, so a 3-for-4 cameo never crowds out the everyday player. Clear the bar and the separation shows: a good hitter lives in the .330 range, a great one pushes past .400 with an OPS north of 1.000, while an ace holds an ERA under 2.00 on the seven-inning scale.
